Wildlife Conservation & Hospitality Management School

"From our unique learning approach to educational initiatives, state-of-the-art facilities, to operating our own luxury safari lodge and offering students world class support services on campus. Our student environment encourages singular stories of triumph, distinction, determination, compassion, courage and passion."

At ABT, our state-of-the-art training campuses offers different combinations of nationally accredited and endorsed certificate courses up to a National Diploma NQF 4 level; providing students with a well balanced learning opportunity that is aligned with industry requirements and needs... some courses are also paired with compulsory work placement and internship programs which further enhances the learning experience with ABT by allowing students the opportunity to apply newly learned knowledge and skills first hand in the workplace.

At AFRICAN BUSH TRAINING we strife to uphold, maintain and contribute to industry standards in everything we do..While ABT exhibits many features of the traditional tertiary  institution, our uniquely robust approach to such issues as students’ personal growth and professional development continues to win the respect of educationalists worldwide.

The school is built on TRADITION, ETHOS and VALUES and this is underwritten in everything we do at ABT...

Founded by conservationist , veteran lodge manager and Kruger Park trails ranger, Mr. Johann Jurgens in the early 2000's, this school has grown from what started out to be a small scale training facility, to a leading provider of high quality Qualification- and Learning Programme- Certificate courses.

In formulating his original concept for ABT thirty years ago, principal Johann Jurgens adhered firmly to the classical dictum mens sana in corpore sano - a healthy mind in a healthy body. He was determined to focus on providing students from all backgrounds with the opportunity to learn and kick start successful careers in the Field Guiding, Wildlife Conservation and Hospitality Management fields.

ABT is supported by a team of reputable and well-respected educators/instructors, all of whom are specialists in their respective fields. They are attracted to work with ABT on a full-time or part-time basis by the opportunity it provides for them to share knowledge and experience with a new generation of conservationists and wildlife ambassadors- and all of them take exceptionally deep interests in their charges... As a result, ABT puts strong emphasis on the standard and quality of our courses, providing our students with the opportunity to build meaningful portfolios of skills evidence and competency.

The unique ABT educational philosophy stresses, that a healthy balance between theoretical and practical training must be maintained throughout the execution of our courses on offer.

We are especially proud of our policy of integrated learning; we believe, and encourage students not only to focus on academic achievement, but to grow and develop at both a personal and professional level, and we monitor their progress in these areas constantly, extremely closely and inventively.

ABT holds to the principle that holistic learning should be integrated into all curriculum's and learning programs. As followers of the 'wilderness' school tradition, we entrust this to both the unique location of our campuses and the valuable contributions made by our trainers in training.

With a long standing track record of academic success, ABT continues to strife towards excellence as we live up to our reputation as Africa’s leading private school in conservation and hospitality. Apart from our accredited further education career courses, we also offer gap year and sabbatical programmes, high school and university study abroad programmes, custom courses and on-site skills development programmes for professional staff at safari lodges.

AFRICAN BUSH TRAINING's unique approach to education and skills development are aimed towards promoting the development of character and enabling individuals to realise their full potential growing into; and becoming resilient and ethical ambassadors for wildlife conservation in Africa.

These are provided in a nurturing and enriching environment where our ETHOS, VALUES and TRADITION is fostered and honoured in everything we do...

At AFRICAN BUSH TRAINING (ABT) it is our mission to train and supply the wildlife conservation and safari lodge industry with confident, competent and skilled individuals that will...

  • TALK with "REASON"...
  • ACT with "DETERMINATION" ...
  • DO with "PURPOSE"...
  • EXECUTE with "MEANING"...

Johann Jurgens

Johann Jurgens

Johann is a veteran in South African conservation circles and is well known for his valuable contributions made towards environmental education, training and various other conservation awareness successes over the years. After attaining a Diploma in Game Ranch Management he went on to qualify himself as a professional field guide followed by a 30 year long career in conservation that led him to leave tracks as field guide and lodge manager in the Sabi Sands, Madikwe and Kapama Game Reserves; and in later years becoming a well respected trails ranger being involved in the introduction of the very first walking trails being conducted in the Kruger National Park. Following a very rewarding chapter in his life as concession warden in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve; Johann officially retired from the commercial Eco tourism scene in 2017 to head African Bush Training as principal and student mentor. Johann is also serving on the STNADARDS CENTRAL and one of the founding members of the ‘International Students Conservation Initiative’ or better known as the ISCI which is currently taking the wildlife and hospitality sector by storm as one of the most successful and efficient suppliers of trained personnel and support staff to the wildlife conservation & safari industry.

I'm devoting my whole life to being an ambassador for wildlife conservation. Over the years I've gained allot of momentum and drive to live my dream and passion. A small monster inside of me was woken up when I first qualified as a field guide which led me on an even more determined 'quest' in life to expand my knowledge and learn as much as I can about the bush and wild outdoors. At this point in time I've managed to complete my FGASA NQF 4 and recently became a Specialized back up trails guide, currently being well on the way to fulfil my dream of becoming a Professional Nature Guide and accomplished Field Guide Trainer.

I'm Anuchka Petzer from Lydenburg, South Africa. Shortly after I finished with school I started working in the hospitality and tourism industry. I fell in love with nature at a very young age. I've got loads of passion and allot of enthusiasm for what I do and I always do what is necessary with all of my heart. I believe that I am in a good place at the right time in my life now, working for and being part of the ABT team....
